Three Generations, One Commitment: The History of Sharp Dentistry in Rock Hill, SC

For nearly 60 years, Sharp Dentistry has served families in Rock Hill, South Carolina, as a locally owned, independent dental practice. Since opening its doors in 1966, the practice has remained rooted in the community and in a simple philosophy: dental care should be guided by the needs of the patient.

Today, three generations of Sharp dentists are part of that history.

Serving Rock Hill Since 1966

The story of Sharp Dentistry began with Dr. Henry D. Sharp Jr., a Rock Hill native who graduated from Emory University School of Dentistry and served two years as a dentist in the United States Air Force. After returning home, Dr. Sharp opened his dental practice in Rock Hill on September 7, 1966.

More than three decades later, his son, Dr. H. Drummond Sharp III, joined the practice in July 1998 after completing dental school at the Medical University of South Carolina and an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the University of Florida. Father and son practiced together until Dr. Henry Sharp passed away in 2012.

The third generation arrived in July 2025 when Dr. Madison D. Sharp joined his father in practice. A Rock Hill native, Dr. Madison Sharp earned his DMD from the Medical University of South Carolina and subsequently completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency with extensive training in implant dentistry, surgery, and advanced restorative care.

As Sharp Dentistry approaches its 60th anniversary in 2026, the practice remains family-owned and committed to the community where it began.

Why Choose a Privately Owned Dental Practice?

Dentistry has changed considerably since 1966. One of the most significant changes has been the growth of large corporate dental organizations and insurance-driven models of dental care.

Sharp Dentistry has chosen a different path.

As a privately owned, non-corporate dental office in Rock Hill, decisions about patient care are made by the dentists who actually examine and treat our patients. There is no distant corporate office establishing production quotas, determining how much time should be allocated for a procedure, or deciding which materials should be used based primarily on cost.

That independence gives us the freedom to focus on something much more important: what we believe is the appropriate treatment for the individual patient sitting in our chair.

Dentistry Without Corporate Production Demands

Dentistry is both a healthcare profession and an extremely detail-oriented craft. Quality treatment takes time.

In a privately owned practice, we can determine how much time a procedure requires based on its complexity rather than a standardized corporate production schedule. We can invest in technology, materials, laboratories, continuing education, and techniques because we believe they improve the care we provide—not simply because they satisfy a corporate purchasing formula.

This independence is particularly valuable when treating complex dental problems. Implant dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, full-mouth reconstruction, occlusion, advanced restorative dentistry, bone grafting, and other comprehensive treatments often require careful diagnosis and individualized planning.

Our goal is not to fit the patient into a predetermined treatment model. The treatment plan should fit the patient.

Why Sharp Dentistry Is Not Controlled by Dental Insurance Contracts

Sharp Dentistry is a fee-for-service dental practice and is not contracted as an in-network provider with dental insurance companies. We are still happy to file primary dental insurance claims on our patients’ behalf and help patients utilize their available benefits.

The distinction is important.

Dental insurance can be useful in helping patients offset the cost of care, but an insurance benefit should not determine what treatment is clinically appropriate.

By remaining outside insurance network contracts, our doctors maintain greater independence when recommending treatment, selecting materials, choosing laboratories, and determining how care should be delivered. Treatment recommendations can be based on clinical findings, long-term prognosis, function, esthetics, and the patient’s individual goals rather than simply on what an insurance plan prefers or reimburses.

When multiple reasonable treatment options exist, we want that conversation to occur between the patient and the dentist.

Continuity of Care Across Generations

There is another advantage to a long-standing private dental practice that is difficult to quantify: continuity.

Over nearly six decades, Sharp Dentistry has had the privilege of caring for multiple generations of Rock Hill families. Children become adults. Adults bring their spouses. Eventually, many bring their own children and grandchildren.

That history creates relationships and provides valuable clinical context. Instead of viewing dentistry as a series of isolated procedures, we can consider how a patient’s dental health has changed over years—or even decades.

The technology inside our office may look very different from what Dr. Henry Sharp used when he opened the practice in 1966, but the value of knowing our patients has not changed.

Traditional Private Practice Meets Modern Dentistry

Being a 60-year-old practice does not mean practicing dentistry the way it was performed 60 years ago.

Sharp Dentistry combines the values of a traditional family dental practice with modern digital dentistry. Our Rock Hill office incorporates technologies such as CBCT 3D imaging, intraoral scanning, CAD/CAM dental design, 3D printing, digital radiography, guided implant planning, and an in-house dental laboratory.

These technologies allow us to diagnose, plan, design, and complete many aspects of treatment within our own office while maintaining direct control over the process.

For us, technology is not intended to replace the relationship between dentist and patient. It is another tool that allows us to provide more precise, predictable, and individualized care.

Nearly 60 Years of Dentistry in Rock Hill—and the Next Generation

Rock Hill has changed tremendously since September 1966, and dentistry has changed with it. Sharp Dentistry has been fortunate to grow alongside the community for three generations.

Dr. Henry D. Sharp Jr. established the practice. Dr. H. Drummond Sharp III continued it. Dr. Madison D. Sharp represents its third generation and the beginning of its next chapter.

Through those generations, the underlying commitment has remained remarkably consistent: provide thoughtful dental care, invest in quality, treat patients as individuals, and maintain the professional independence to recommend the treatment we believe is right for them.

After nearly 60 years, Sharp Dentistry remains what it began as—a locally owned, family dental practice serving the families of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and beyond.

We intend to keep it that way.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sharp Dentistry

How long has Sharp Dentistry been serving Rock Hill, South Carolina?

Sharp Dentistry has served the Rock Hill, SC community since 1966. The practice was founded by Dr. Henry D. Sharp Jr. on September 7, 1966, and has remained a locally owned family dental practice for nearly 60 years.

How many generations of dentists have practiced at Sharp Dentistry?

Sharp Dentistry represents three generations of dentists from the Sharp family.

The practice was founded by Dr. Henry D. Sharp Jr. in 1966. His son, Dr. H. Drummond Sharp III joined the practice in 1998. In 2025, Dr. Madison D. Sharp joined his father, becoming the third generation of the Sharp family to practice dentistry in Rock Hill.

Is Sharp Dentistry a privately owned dental office?

Yes. Sharp Dentistry is a privately owned, family dental practice in Rock Hill, South Carolina. It is not owned by a corporate dental organization or private equity group.

Remaining independently owned allows the dentists within the practice to make decisions about patient care, technology, materials, scheduling, and treatment philosophy at the local level.

What is the advantage of choosing a privately owned dentist?

One of the primary advantages of an independent dental practice is that clinical decisions can remain between the patient and the treating dentist.

At Sharp Dentistry, treatment recommendations are based on each patient’s oral health, clinical findings, long-term prognosis, functional needs, esthetic goals, and personal preferences. The practice is not subject to corporate production quotas or treatment mandates established by a distant management organization.

Is Sharp Dentistry a corporate dental office?

No. Sharp Dentistry is an independent, non-corporate dental practice owned and operated locally in Rock Hill, SC.

The practice has remained within the Sharp family for three generations and continues the private-practice model established by Dr. Henry D. Sharp Jr. in 1966.

Does Sharp Dentistry accept dental insurance?

Sharp Dentistry is a fee-for-service dental practice and is not contracted as an in-network provider with dental insurance companies. However, the office is happy to file primary dental insurance claims on behalf of patients to help them utilize available benefits.

Because dental insurance policies and benefits vary significantly, patients are encouraged to contact the office with questions about their individual coverage.

Why would a dental office choose not to participate in insurance networks?

Remaining outside insurance network contracts can provide a dental practice with greater independence in determining how treatment is planned and delivered. It also allows our doctors to select high-quality dental laboratories and materials based on their clinical judgment rather than being limited by corporate purchasing policies or insurance reimbursement considerations.

At Sharp Dentistry, this independence allows treatment recommendations to focus on clinical needs, long-term outcomes, appropriate materials, treatment techniques, and patient goals rather than allowing an insurance company’s reimbursement schedule to dictate clinical decisions.

Dental insurance can still be valuable for helping offset treatment expenses, but insurance coverage and appropriate dental treatment are not always the same thing.

Does being out-of-network mean dental insurance cannot be used at Sharp Dentistry?

No. Being out-of-network does not necessarily mean that a patient cannot receive dental insurance benefits.

Many dental insurance plans include out-of-network benefits. Sharp Dentistry can file primary insurance claims on behalf of patients, and benefits are then determined according to the terms of the patient’s individual dental plan.

Does Sharp Dentistry have production quotas?

Sharp Dentistry does not operate under corporate production demands or externally imposed treatment quotas. Our doctors recommend treatment based on identified dental needs and discuss elective or cosmetic treatment according to each patient’s individual desires and goals.

As an independently owned practice, our doctors can determine appointment length, treatment recommendations, materials, technology, and clinical protocols based on what they believe is appropriate for each patient and procedure.

Why does independence matter for complex dental treatment?

Complex dentistry frequently requires individualized planning rather than a standardized approach. Treatments involving dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, full-mouth reconstruction, occlusion, advanced restorative dentistry, bone grafting, and extensive rehabilitation may require additional diagnostic records, planning, communication, and treatment time.

An independent practice has the flexibility to devote resources and appointment time according to the complexity of the individual case.

Does Sharp Dentistry use modern dental technology?

Yes. Although Sharp Dentistry has been part of the Rock Hill community since 1966, the practice incorporates modern digital technology into contemporary patient care.

Technology available within the practice includes CBCT 3D imaging, digital intraoral scanning, CAD/CAM dental design, 3D printing, digital radiography, guided implant planning, and in-house dental laboratory capabilities.

These technologies can assist with diagnosis, treatment planning, restorative dentistry, dental implant treatment, and the fabrication of certain dental restorations and appliances.

What types of dentistry does Sharp Dentistry provide?

Sharp Dentistry provides comprehensive dental care with an emphasis on general, restorative, preventive, cosmetic, and implant dentistry. Depending on the patient’s needs, treatment may range from routine preventive and restorative care to more advanced procedures involving dental implants, reconstruction, digital dentistry, and complex restorative treatment.

Every patient’s needs are different, so treatment begins with an appropriate examination, diagnosis, and individualized treatment plan.

Does Sharp Dentistry treat multiple generations of families?

Yes. After nearly 60 years in Rock Hill, Sharp Dentistry has had the opportunity to care for multiple generations of families within the community.

Long-term continuity of care can provide valuable perspective because a dental team may be able to observe changes in a patient’s oral health, restorations, bite, and dental needs over many years.

Where is Sharp Dentistry located?

Sharp Dentistry is located in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and serves patients from Rock Hill and surrounding communities.

The practice has served the local community since 1966 and remains an independently owned, third-generation family dental practice.

What makes Sharp Dentistry different?

Sharp Dentistry combines the continuity and personal relationships of a traditional family-owned dental practice with contemporary dental technology and advanced treatment capabilities.
